In Belgium, every car driving on public roads must be compulsorily insured. To do so, you take out what is known as BA Auto, a civil liability insurance policy. It covers the damage you cause to others in a car accident (if you are at fault, i.e.: you broke traffic rules and caused the accident).
The damage to your own vehicle (car, light cargo, boat, mobilhome ...) this insurance does not pay. For that you need comprehensive insurance. And with additional driver insurance (a variant of personal accident insurance), your medical expenses are also covered if you cause an accident as a car driver.
