Health insurance is compulsory for everyone residing in Belgium. For this, as a private individual you join a health insurance fund (or mutualiteit) or the Auxiliary Fund for Sickness and Disability Insurance (HZIV). As a self-employed person, you can also opt for the Social Insurance Fund for the self-employed.

This insurance reimburses part of your medical expenses: a consultation with a doctor, medication, physical therapy ... And gives you a benefit if you are unable to work due to illness, an accident or pregnancy. The NIHDI (National Institute for Sickness and Disability Insurance) is the government agency that oversees the work of the health insurance funds and determines which costs they may reimburse, under what conditions.

When you end up in the hospital, your health insurance does not cover all the costs involved. For that, you can turn to your hospitalization insurance. In case of an accident after which no hospital stay is necessary, you can turn to your personal accident insurance.
